Vietnam Women's Volleyball Squad Crisis at Asiad 20: Only 3 Outside Hitters, Two 17-18 Year Olds

After the 2026 Asian Championship in China, numerous reports emerged about the Vietnam women's volleyball team. The registered squad is only 11 players, and even the 12-player list for Asiad 20 is surprising. Specifically, Nguyễn Thị Uyên is injured, Vi Thị Như Quỳnh is absent for health reasons, and Trần Thị Thanh Thúy remains the core. The result is a severe weakening of the reception system and attack distribution. The important matches ahead in Japan face major risks against strong opponents like China, Japan, or Thailand. Based on observations from recent competitions, the absence of two key outside hitters puts the team in "single-point attack" mode on Thanh Thúy. With only three outside hitters left, including two 17-18 year olds Phạm Quỳnh Hương and Bùi Thị Ánh Thảo, the team faces challenges in physical maturity and experience. Teams like China or Thailand often use aggressive serves to disrupt reception. If Vietnam cannot adjust in time, they will face more out-of-system situations. Instead of fast attack, a shift to more defensive play based on blocking and counter-attack may be needed. However, this could reduce overall quality. Comparing to the Asian Championship with 14 players, reducing to 12 shows OCA tightening regulations to increase competition. This creates huge pressure for the coach, especially with the dense schedule after the Asian Championship. Regarding world ranking, Asiad 20 is crucial for the 2028 Olympic cycle, every match awarding FIVB points. A poor Vietnam result would drop their ranking. This increases the pressure to select the strongest squad despite the crisis. I recall at SEA Games 33, when the young team was tested, they showed potential but lacked consistency.
