In mid-March, during a Sectionals final in Texas, the scoreboard froze at 2:17.70 when Ashlyn Anderson touched the wall. Anderson swims for Lakeside Aquatic Club and competes for Keller High School. She qualified for Winter Juniors West in December, placing 23rd in the 100 breast and 46th in the 200 breast. Two months later, she reached the UIL 6A state final and finished sixth. In August, she went 2:35.39 in the long course 200 breast at Summer Junior Nationals, taking 28th overall. Her 200 IM time trial of 2:07.06 sits just 1.74 seconds from the conference A-final standard. Coaches at Rice will need to decide whether to use her as a narrow specialist or a versatile weapon. With two full seasons of development before she arrives on campus, the arc is more important than the ranking. She is not the most famous recruit of her class, but she is exactly the kind of athlete who gives depth to a mid-major conference.
